The Osprey has been plagued by problems since it's inception. The USMC has stuck by it because they need a tactical helo replacement. The initial issues were from hovering over water and ingesting water into the engine intakes which decreased thrust and the plane went down into the water, sometimes killing the folks in the water. Then, they had problems with compressor stalls and several crashes due to pilot error. Now they are dealing with starting the engines in "maintenance mode". Expensive and costly mistakes.

couldn't GET ME ON ONE OF THOSE

Very interesting article.

I think I saw two or three of those flying recently, near Rockingham NC if I'm remembering right. Anyway, in somewhat of a weird spot, I thought. Nowhere near significant water, LOL, and not too far from Ft. Bragg. I'd never seen them before, and the Marines aren't too close by. Cherry Point could have been home base, I suppose.

But very cool to watch them buzzing and hovering. Like big bumble bees.

Wasn't the Harrier the predecessor to the Osprey?

We saw Ospreys flying overhead constantly, out of mearby Eglin AFB, when we were in Ft. Walton Beach (FL panhandle) last year. Pretty cool aircraft...when they can keep them aloft.
Wasn't the Harrier the predecessor to the Osprey?
The Harrier is actually the predecessor to the F-35B V/STOL version. The Osprey is a hybrid aircraft that the USMC wants to replace their helo fleet, it gives them the ability to travel quickly in aircraft mode and also deploy on ropes like helos allow while hovering. It's proven to be a monster to tame but they aren't scrapping the project whatsoever.

My son worked on Harriers back in the 2000's when he was in North Carolina, that is a neat plane
8.) Swamp Fox - 07/08/2015
He was in Jacksonville or thereabouts?

Cherry Point North Caroliner:wink

How about the F-16 slamming into the Cessna near Charleston yesterday (?). I'd like to know how that happened.

One spot I hunt near Shaw AFB has F-16s over it constantly. There was a pilot in the club for a couple of years and he used to say he liked to buzz the club to push deer into certain areas, LOL.

Up in NC, we don't have a lot of Air Force presence, but I remember hunting 20 miles or so out of Chapel Hill one Saturday. Some deer stepped out in the pasture I was sitting over, and just as I was about to get a shot some jets doing a fly-over for a Tar Heels football game roared though...Well, those deer spooked bigger than $#!+ and I lost my opportunity.

I believe if those had been some Sumter, SC deer they would have thought "Ho Hum" and one of them would have ridden home in the truck with me. :wink

Strange (and sad) situation yesterday with that Cessna crash. The father and son on board who were killed had just suffered 2 deaths in their family a few days ago. The father's brother and sister in law were murdered by a grandchild. Sounds crazy, probably doesn't only happen in South Carolina BUT most likely relegated to Mississippi and maybe Louisiana. You know, the hick states.........
13.) Swamp Fox - 07/09/2015
If people from "the hick states" were Mexicans, everybody would be having a fit right now, LOL. You should have said, "Some, I assume, are good people." :wink

You know why Luv2 won't come down here to visit? He says he's afraid he'll get hit on the head and have his wallet stolen. ---And not just by me...

:tap::wink
14.) Jon - 07/09/2015
I think Luv2 could survive a firework going off while perched atop his gord
15.) Swamp Fox - 07/09/2015
LOL...

I guess you heard about the 21-year-old in Maine, then...

So far I'm resisting the urge to comment on that one.

A NY Giants player is losing a finger, I heard this morning. Can't wait to read how that fireworks mishap happened.

Crazy comes from everywhere...(there are people)!
