1.) Wild Bob - 11/30/2015
So I've been thinking about how to work this, and I'm just going to throw it out there... (Hopefully without any issues or concerns from the big dawgs here at HC!)

I've got one, very cool small Christmas gift to give away to someone here on HC. I'd like to make this an annual thing if it goes well.

A contest if you will, the winner of which will get the Give-Away gift on about the 20th or so of December. The contest will run from tonight to December 15th. Now the Give-Away gift will remain a secret, until someone wins it on the 16th; then I'll post of picture of it and send it off to the winner. I will divulge the following for inquiring minds: it is a brand new, unused item, purchased new from a store this past weekend. (I saw it and immediately thought of you guys, so I picked it up.) This item could easily be at home in your home, deer camp, or man-cave. As a matter of fact, the item would really be at home in a Hunting Camp; so let's run with that theme for the contest. (Name the Hunting Camp)

So here is how the contest will work - anyone can enter and compete for the Give-Away gift, they just need to be registered on HC. In the spirit of Swampy's Photo Contest it will work in a similar manner. The primary object is to come up with the most creative or most voted for name for a fictitious Hunting Camp, just enter your name in this thread, and then everyone vote for the name(s) you like by giving it a :tu:. On December 16th, I will total up all the votes and the suggested name receiving the most thumbs ups will be the winner. Pretty simple, just come up with a name or names, enter as often as you'd like, and maybe you'll win the Give-Away gift. (Oh, and not to worry, the gift is PG and will not offend any spouses, family members, or hunting buddies.)

Alex...any chance of making this thread a sticky? - Just until Christmas?

Any takers...who's first?

If I didn't already have a good camp name :wink, I would be partial to....Well, PM me. :wink

But if my own camp names were out of bounds :wink, I would call my headquarters The Boars' Nest:

PALACE IN THE POPPLE

By John Madson

It’s a smoky, raunchy boars’ nest

With an unswept, drafty floor

And pillow ticking curtains

And knife scars on the door.

The smell of pine-knot fire

From a stovepipe that’s come loose

Mingles sweetly with the boot grease

And the Copenhagen snoose.

There are work-worn .30-.30s

With battered, steel-shod stocks,

And drying lines of long johns

And of steaming, pungent socks.

There’s a table for the Bloody Four

And their games of two-card draw,

And there’s deep and dreamless sleeping

On bunk ticks stuffed with straw.

Jerry and Jake stand by the stove,

Their gun-talk loud and hot,

And Bogie has drawn a pair of kings,

And is raking in the pot.

Franks’ been drafted again as cook

And is peeling some spuds for stew

While Bruce wanders by in baggy drawers

Reciting “Dan McGrew.”

Nowhere on Earth is fire so warm

Nor coffee so infernal,

Nor whiskers so stiff, jokes so rich,

Nor hope blooming so eternal.

A man can live for a solid week

In the same old under-britches

And walk like a man and spit when he wants

And scratch himself where he itches.

I tell you, boys, there’s no place else

Where I’d rather be, come fall,

Where I eat like a bear and sing like a wolf

And feel like I’m bull-pine tall.

In that raunchy cabin out in the bush

In the land of the raven and loon,

With a tracking snow lying new to the ground

At the end of the rutting moon.

3.) Wild Bob - 11/30/2015
So, y'all are just going to sit there on yer loins and let this little gem go to Swampy huh?

Well, do as you may, but you'll be sorry...

Nothing is out of bounds - throw it out there Swampy! :wink
4.) Swamp Fox - 11/30/2015
You got one good idea out of me. Don't be greedy. :wink

I'm going on a work slowdown...Bob Peck thinks I should be getting paid to post,, LOL...

This may be why no one can find Alex...:wink

I'm sure after such long stretches of silence some of our other members have some decent ideas...:fire:

5.) Wild Bob - 11/30/2015
Well, I'm not participating since I came up with it...so it might end up being a contest with no contestants! (Sheesh, if we get any more lively around here we'll have to start calling it Hunting Country Acres!) :re:

I'm sure the others are just busy thinking really hard on it, before they post a name. :wink
6.) Swamp Fox - 11/30/2015
I'm sure that's it. :wink

Bob, did you ever use a (canvas) wall tent when you were in Tenn.? I thought about one for a while but figured I'd be fighting a losing battle against mildew (and skeeters) with the humidity here. I've seen you with at least one on some of your Western trips.

Some years ago, I think Jon won a hog-hunting trip to a Georgia camp that used wall tents. I don't know if they were canvas, though. I always wanted to ask about those. Not sure the canvas alternatives are really viable for me, but I don't know.

Anyhoo, you'll get one more camp name out of me before I go back to trolling the other members..."The Rendezvous"...Maybe a little obvious, but that's how slow it is around here, LOL...Plus it goes with your trapping background.

11.) Wild Bob - 11/30/2015
Now we're cooking! :-)

I gotta give Parker a :tu: for "Camp Kwitcherbichin" ...That's a good one!

Bluecat - if that was Camp Jane Seymour, then you might have gotten a thumbs up, but no dice on butts. :bad:

Remember, y'all got to vote too, but only one thumbs up allowed for each of your own suggestions.

Keep 'em coming. Come on Mr. Peck - I know you've at least one name in ya!

It's a good story, and I'm sticking to it! :wink
13.) Wild Bob - 11/30/2015
Swampy - I do have a canvas wall tent that I bought when I lived in TN. I've used it more out west here, but I did use while hog hunting in the winter in the Big South Fork area a few times.

I love that tent! The one I bought was made by Davis Tent and Awning out of Denver Colorado.

You can check them out at their website at: http://www.davistent.com/

I did a lot of research back when I bought that tent, as there were a number of highly recommended tent makers out there. What impressed me most about the Davis tent was that when I called the company to ask some questions about their tents, I was directed right to the owner of the company. He spent about 15 minutes on the phone with me and really took the time to understand what I planned to use the tent for. As I mentioned, I had done a lot of research before I even called him, and it was really refreshing to have an owner tell me things like, "Nah, you don't want to waste your money on that option, but you might want to think about this instead..." He could have just went along with anything and sold me everything I asked for, be he seemed to really be concerned about selling me the best product he could for what I needed and wanted! (Did I mention that the owner is a hunter as well? He’s not just some corporate business man; he actually uses his own tents.)

The biggest thing I had to do while using it in the southeast (and this is where most people get lazy and it costs them an expensive tent) is be sure to dry it out good after use. DO NOT PUT ONE AWAY DAMP! After I'd come back from a hunt, especially if it got wet or the humidity was up; I'd half assed stretch it out / hang it up in the barn and let it dry good before I packed it away in the bin I keep it in. (A guy could do this in a garage as well...)

Also, make sure it is built out of good quality canvas, not cheap import material. Another important thing is to make sure it is treated with a good quality sealing product at the maker. (Some of these tent companies will try to sell you on the idea that you can buy their product cheaper and then just spray your own sealer on yourself at home...and you can, but it won't be anywhere as near effective as a good quality soaking that the maker can do in his shop.)

You know, since you are in a wetter climate, you may want to look at a wall tent made out some of this newer synthetic fabric - it may be easier to maintain. But there are down sides to that too - if you are going to heat in it, the heavier canvas is better. Also, and I can testify to this in regards to canvas - there have been a couple of times I had to put that tent up with my hunting partner in some nasty windy / snow conditions in Wyoming and if we had been putting up a lighter more flowing type fabric...it would have been really hard, the extra weight of the canvas actually made pulling it over the frame easier in those conditions.

I was going to PM you with this information, but I thought may be others would find it useful, so I figured I'd just lay it out here...hope I answered your question(s). If you have any more just let me know and I can dig out some pictures of it if you want to see more of it - just let me know.

15.) Swamp Fox - 12/01/2015
Thanks. I like the breathability of canvas, but my impression was that I might be better off with a synthetic here (from a few different angles). But I picked up on some negatives with the synthetics, as you mention. For one thing, I thought it might be a little stuffy. Interesting points about heating with canvas and setting it up. Always kinda wondered if a canvas tent could withstand being set up for a month or two at a time, say, around here.

How bout "Camp Office".

When people say "where are you going?" you can say, "I'm going to the office."

I do need a college kid to tell me the name of a song I heard playing at a football game a couple of weeks ago, though. I guess I've lost touch since I stopped going to Spring Break...:wink

Speaking of bars: There is a small town on the Res about an hour from me that has many bars...but my favorite three are named, "Water Hole # 1"
"Water Hole #2" and "Water Hole # 3"...none of which are anywhere as nice as even a bad college bar, but the original names crack me up!

I find it interesting that no one else is voting for anyone else's suggestions...discriminating bunch around here, or else everyone is just trying to keep the tally down low.

:tu: additional for kwitcherbitchin. It just keeps getting better.

And each article of clothing she sheds will garner you one more vote. So get crackin.

DP--

Not from me, because I've seen her Sports Illustrated swimsuit video...It's spoiled me for just about anything else, LOL.

But you might catch a lurker with that. :wink

P.S. Bluecat will owe you bigtime if you post Genie with her horse on the beach. :wink Walking or riding. Equally good.

Well, I don't know about the protest sign... I've never been one for hippies or the newer me generation (I was raised by older parents that grew up in the Depression and fought in WWII). However, I'd be taking my 'Keg a Que' rather than the old Coleman stove. :-) (Which by the way, is my hunting camp grill.)
