20.) DParker - 03/22/2013
In this one, B.B. manages to capture the essence of the blues in a single (title) lyric:

"Nobody loves me but my mother....and she could be jivin' too."

I couldn't stay away...LOL...I know I've played this several times on the MV threads, but here it is again...talk about solos/jams, esp. drums...Woo-Hoo!!! Michael Shrieve with Santana at Woodstock:

24.) Deerminator - 03/22/2013
I digress

25.) Swamp Fox - 03/22/2013
Crap...that's nowhere close to getting Shrieve's drum solo...They must have taken the extended video down....Let's try this:

Speaking of excellent drummers, I give you Sheila E.

We should have a drum-off between her and Hannah Ford...Just sayin'...
Another of the best songs ever... ;)
"One of the best songs ever" is rapidly becoming a mighty non-exclusive club. Here, let me help dilute it further by nominating Cream and Badfinger (the latter getting two entries, 'cuz.....I just can't decide). And, OK...so they're not really "best songs ever", but just "really good bands". Shut up.

You're lucky. {Insert line from Four Yorkshiremen here} For some reason, nearly every time I get a song stuck in my head it's something I hate.
50.) Swamp Fox - 03/22/2013
If someone finds the studio version of this version in English. let me know.

Dylan must be hiding it.

Got to go now " Duck Dynasty " is about to start.:tu:
52.) Swamp Fox - 03/22/2013
Point of Order:

youtube used to give me alternate versions/close relatives of the music videos I found down the side of the screen. Now it seems to be a mish-mash of search engine-optimized selections (kayaks, fishing, hunting, firearms...whatever...rather than strictly music videos). I have to hit the back button to get to a screen with related music videos. Very annoying. Do I have to live with it or can I do something to get back to the way youtube used to display?

54.) Swamp Fox - 03/23/2013
LOL...Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son...

This is one of my favorite versions of the classic Utah Phillips song "Rock Salt and Nails". He wrote it in response to his girlfriend, who sent him a Dear John lettter while he was at sea with the Merchant Marine. It's been covered by just about everyone. If anyone's interested, some of the best versions are by Tim Stanbaugh (local boy), Carl Johnson, JD Crowe and the New South, Joe Ely, Flatt and Scruggs, Joan Baez....You get the idea...

55.) XJCraver - 03/23/2013
Hey, you said Joe Ely! :tu:

56.) Swamp Fox - 03/23/2013
JE needs a listenable version of Rock Salt and Nails on youtube but there isn't one...

57.) DParker - 03/23/2013
It's time for a good instrumental. I heard this (for the first time) on Bluesville on the ride home from work tonight. Chicago Blues Reunion, GM Blues. It's nice that there's still some good things coming out of the windy city...

DP---:tu:

I really need to get a sat. radio deal going.
60.) DParker - 03/23/2013
Honestly, it's a love/hate relationship. I despise Sirius-XM as a company...but having all those stations in the car is like crack. I'm hooked and can't bring myself to give it up. I came close when they tried to charge me an "activation fee" to activate the REPLACEMENT receiver I had to buy when the original one finally crapped out (out of warranty, of course). I said, "You want me to pay YOU just to allow me to use the radio I had to buy because the old one quit working, all for the privilege of continuing to pay you a monthly subscription for the service?" I told them to pound sand and that I'd be returning the unit the next morning...until they finally apologized and graciously waived the fee. Very generous of them.

You Navy guys have all the cool stories. One day, years ago when I was living in southern California, I was fishing from Aliso Pier near Laguna Beach, listening to the two old sailors right next to me swapping stories about being stationed in Subic Bay. It was the first time I ever heard about eating "balut". I nearly tossed stomach chum over the railing.

I don't even want to get into my lack of a decent stereo system back then...or even now, LOL...Those were the days when people obsessed over which turntable and which speakers...Fights broke out between rival gangs... :-).Wow, was I lusting after good equipment, but it wasn't to be...

My first album was Robin Trower, Bridge of Sighs..Spiders and Snakes must have come soon after...I won "any album" from a rock station by being the sixth caller, or whatever, and boy were they surprised when I asked for a "country" record, LOL.

On a side note, I just found out Jim Stafford played in a band in high school with Gram Parsons, who is one of my favorites...Yeah, I said one of my favorites....;) You can be sure I will dig up some GP now...

This is remarkably close to how RT and the band sounded back in the day (1974):

These are two campfire songs that I could think of quickly, though: Yellow Submarine with my best buddy Kevin----thank you, Colt 45!----and I'd solo on Desperado...

Again, this is all back in the day (yeah, right :) ...)

BTW, there's another reason for you to get hooked up with Sirius-XM. On Saturdays the '70s station replays Kasim's old "American Top 40" episodes, so you get to recall what the most popular stuff was from that week in some year from the late '70s. While it's a great stroll down memory lane for me, it's also tough for me to admit how much of what I listened to back then was complete crap. :p

Which reminds me. At my daughter's wedding reception she, her new husband and all of their friends were on the dance floor when the DJ initiated a brief karaoke segment. The third song was Piano Man, and the moment it started everyone of them had to whip out their cell phones and look up the lyrics so they could sing along. Now, I don't care how old you are...there are just certain drinking songs that you need to know, and that's one of them. I chided them severely afterward. So, for anyone else similarly handicapped...

In the meantime, I'm looking for tunes...

Crookedeye, you no you have her poster on your wall..Don't keep trying to fool these people that you can never remeber her name, LOL
111.) crookedeye - 03/24/2013
this weather here is really going to put a daper in my turkey hunt this week..snowed yesterday...was going to go tommorrow and camp out for a few days but its going to be to cold. i think i'll sit around the house with my electric blanket and watch tv..

i have the 6,7,8,9 of april off..i think those days are going to be perfect...65 degrees sunny...last year this time it was in the 90's..
112.) Swamp Fox - 03/24/2013
I'm no meteorologist, but it seems like we've had a very gray, rainy, windy and chilly start to the year. Not as cold as a couple of years ago, but no picnic either. Fishing is behind schedule.

:-)

This is also well-worth a listen:

Yep, that's a good one too. He's one of those guys who everybody who's in-the-know has been hip to for a long time...but an old fart like me is just now discovering and saying, "How did I not know about this before?"

Kinda' like Tom Rigney (the guy with the fiddle), only slightly less so...

That's hawt!

For a minute or so there, I thought I was listening to at least two fiddles! He gets some stuff out of that thing.

I always feel bad for the rest of the band, though, when there's such a great solo performance and they're basically there just to lay down a rhythm...or in this case supplement the vibe he was laying out all on his own, LOL.

I hope they got free drinks after!

OK, for all you "It's not Friday yet!" rules nazis....stuff it. If I wait until then I'll forget about this. Here's one of those, "How did I not know about this?" artists that I discovered on another forum last night. At first, from the looks of them, I thought someone gave the Duck Dynasty guys some homemade instruments and a microphone...but by about 30 seconds in I was hooked. "Seasick Steve":

"I started out with nothin', and I still got most of it left."

How can you not love lyrics like that? :p

YouTube has tons of this guy's stuff.

Great find! I went to a blues show a long time ago with (probably) Steady Rollin Bob Margolin, a guy who's been around here quite a while. He likes to do a lot of education about the blues in his show and whether it was him or not, somebody trotted out all sorts of things that had been or still were used as instruments, or to make instruments. Really amazing. And they sound GOOD!

Searching YouTube. Searching. Please wait. Please wait.

Results found. Outstanding, and visually really interesting. Old Bob looks like more of a sax-playing jazz cat...but he's definitely a blues man. And the guy on the harmonica looks WAY too white (like a greaser stuck in the late '50s) to be blowin' a blues harp like that...but he's good.

I think we're really elevating this place above and beyong being merely a hunting site. It's a cultural experience. :wink

Bob Margolin has quite the resume, but every time I've seen him he's just as down to earth as he can be. And he loves to talk about the blues and all the blues people.

I dig that kind of stuff. Whenever my boy and I are headed home from a Saturday morning hunt we always listen to "B.B. and Me" on the Bluesville (XM) station. It's blues tunes punctuated by B.B. and the show's host (and sometimes an additional blues legend as guest) just reminiscing and generally BSing about the old days when they were relative unknowns and trying to make a living, traveling from town to town to perform. Always fun to listen to.

Old Bob played with this band but I don't think he was with them when I used to go see them ALL THE TIME in college...I probably missed him by a year or two?

When I was iin school, they were known simply as The Allstars, while he references "The Charlottesville Allstars" in his bio. Anyway, a good band if they ever pop up in y'all's area to do a show. I don't know if they're still active. But I do remember the harp player! Kick-ass! When I was 17-20, anyway, LOL.

Unfortunately, it looks like there's only one video on youtube:
