1.) Leighton - 03/24/2013
The past few weekends a few of my shooting friends and I have been driving around the countryside in Hertfordshire and Gloucestershire offering farmers a free pest control service on pigeons, crows , rabbits, fox etc.
This face to face tactic seems to have worked well and over the course of three weekends we have picked up over 7500 acres . Some of the farms are relatively small ( tiny compared with those in the US ) 2-3 hundred acres but a few are 1000 - 2000 acres . All of them get trouble with pigeons and crows as most of the farms grow a lot of crops .
Some of these farms have deer problems ( Muntjac and Roe deer ) and although bow hunting is banned here I may soon be in a position to apply for a rife certificate .
All I hope now is that between us we will be able to provide the farmers with a good service and secure this ground for years to come.

Sounds good. I think that approach is very hit or miss here...more miss than hit if you don't know the landowner or know someone who he's close to...I keep thinking sooner or later I'm going to run across a landowner who thinks it's as great an approach as I do, LOL It's hard to get on land even if hogs are tearing it up. I've never really believed crows were a big problem in places I'm familiar with, but I've heard of some guys being successful approaching landowners about them. Maybe it's the birdshot thing vs. the big game thing.

If we had more coyotes here, I'd try it with them. Not enough here to fuss with, though.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

BTW, give us some good Welsh crow and pigeon recipes...All I've ever done is breast crows and put them on the grill with and without bacon. I'm not big on doves unless someone gives them to me, preferably cooking them first. Call me lazy. :-)

no bows but rifles?? sounds odd since the long bow tradition is associated with your island.

over here, 200-300 acres is a good size chunk. in the midwest, 1000 is rare and usually reserved for tillable soil not leaving much huntable.
no bows but rifles?? sounds odd since the long bow tradition is associated with the island which contains your land, which island probably wouldn't be so great if it hadn't been for the Welsh bowmen who come from the southwestern corner of it....
There...fixed it for you...;)

12.) Hunter - 03/24/2013
The wind is howling here too plus threatening rain. I was hoping this front would come through earlier so I could get after a gobbler this afternoon. Guess I'll just have to be a couch potato and watch basketball.

Congrats on the land Leighton. Sucks y'all can't bow hunt there but hey, at least you can still hunt!!
26.) Leighton - 03/24/2013
Once you can get on one farm you can use it as a reference to other farmers and everything seems to fall into place. We didn't go dressed like Rambo , we wore smart casuals and talked as if we knew what we were doing.I mentioned I knew Floyd and I was a member of Hunting Country and that sealed the deal.:-)
27.) Swamp Fox - 03/24/2013

In some areas around here that would actually count against you. :p
