1.) Jon - 04/16/2013
Had a whopping 35 minutes of wait before at least 30 turkeys came into my setup. The first few were hens and once I clucked just one time, the boss hen came running to my deke setup (one breeding pair and a hen). There were 4 toms in full strut and once they saw the boss hen trotting away, they immediately followed. I was in a ground blind with my shotgun so I just got on the gun and waited for the first tom with at least a 10" beard to come into view (they were inside 15yards) and turned his head to jelly.
Once the dead bird was flopping, a bigger tom came in and I got him on video. Here's the youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU1lXgMH2n8

Congrats Jon! Nice bird.
3.) Leighton - 04/16/2013
Way to go Jon , congratulations .
4.) DParker - 04/16/2013
Very nice. I keep telling myself that I've got to find a place around here that's holding birds (none of the available public land units are), but I still have yet to do so. This makes me want to redouble my efforts for next season.

Just don't post any photos if it plucked and wearing those little booties. We don't want bluecat getting all hot and bothered.
5.) Go Bucks - 04/16/2013

Hunting in the fog can be very cool, or a bear!
17.) Jon - 04/17/2013
I hung out for the sunrise anyway, fog lifted and I saw a bunch of doe crossing the field. PLUS, if I would have gone home and woke the wife, it wouldn't have been good!

Wow Kenny, talking sh!t about me? Where do you see me ever talking about you? Ive stayed out of your little drama queen life and now, unprovoked, you make ana$$hole comment about a legal, well deserved harvest in a state that has about 250 turkeys killed a year. Go F yourself bitch, game on now

HE WOULD SPLIT YOUR LIP PUNK
32.) Ventilator - 04/24/2013
Not likely, im sure he spent most of his time eating and lying around judging from the size of his belly.
33.) Jon - 04/24/2013
Hey douchenozzle, you simply have no shame. My fat belly is due to nasty medicine that is keeping me from being dead. Your nasty snaggle tooth face is natural. I can and will lose weight when I'm healthy but your face that looks like a red ass babboon travelling north on a south side lane.
Hope you're feeling good about messing with me Kinny, I ain't backing down to your unwarranted attack.

that right there is the equivalent to scuttling the ship on the windward side of a wintertime remote arctic island with the now population of one..

Vent knows chemotherapy drugs kicks a person's ass. He just wants to help. He's mean that way.
36.) hoyt_em - 04/24/2013
That has to be one of the most classless turds Kinny has dropped off.

Great follow up to an unprovoked stab at someone elses legal method of hunting.
37.) BULLZ-i - 04/24/2013
VAGINATOR:

I'M 100% JON WOULD SPLIT YOUR LIP AND BE LUCKY HE IS ON MEDS OR IT WOULD BE YOUR WHOLE STUPID LOOKING HEAD. REMEMBER I SEEN YOUR VIDEO AND IT DIDNT TAKE SQUAT TO MAKE YOU SQUAT. NOW GO LOOK AT YOURSELF IN THE MIRROR OR SOMETHING

39.) Bob Peck - 04/26/2013
Jon, come to Virginia again. Be our guest. Relax. Eat free, drink free. Kick your feet up. Most important we'll head out and just listen and observe.

We'll take a knee here and there. Maybe offer up a silent prayer. We'll be grateful to our steadfast wives and honor our children. Let's have deep conversations with people who know you and let's forget all the people who don't. They are white noise clutter. They are feckless.

There are too many turkeys to kill and so little time. Ground blind, pop up blind, bow, gun, spear, adult air rifle ... who cares. Maybe we'll shoot, maybe we won't. I am on a whole new level of turkey hunting this season where I attempt to push the envelope in how close I set up. I could care less how close. If they bust me so what. I'm the forest chicken whisperer.
40.) Swamp Fox - 04/26/2013
Bob, what are you hearing about birds "you know where" or maybe closer to me?
41.) DParker - 04/26/2013
Jon, come to Virginia again. Be our guest.
Since you've phrased it that way, you now have to greet him at the airport dressed like this.

42.) Jon - 04/26/2013
As always, you guys make me chuckle and smile which I try to do most of the time, it's sort of my way to say "screw you" to all my problems.
THANK YOU Bob, the invite is especially thoughtful since we had such a blast when I came down a few years ago and we spent the day chasing turkeys around. I don't think I can fit a trip in this season BUT the invite doesn't go unappreciated.
Thanks guys

Uh ... Jon, you might want to take a look at your calendar.

24lbs ... 13-1/4" beard ... 1-1/2" spur (other broken off)

Been after this forest chicken for 3 years. He's got a distinctive snaggle claw on one foot which leaves a taunting impression in soft ground.

First time I tried to kill him this year was opening day. Got in waaaay too close and busted him off the roost in the dark. Buh byee.

This past Saturday (04.27) I circled way, way clear of him, walked past him 400 yards and set up (nesting hen, hovering jake & add'l randomly placed hen). He's down in a ravine, I'm up above him on a ridge line. He sparks up with the gobbling a full hour before technical sunrise. Weather.com says sunrise is one thing but we all know it's getting light a full hour before that. To me, that light is magical.

I wait him out. He flies down and goes quiet. I wait. I wait. I wait some more. He gobbles from the ground beneath the roost and I let a few very loud cackling hen attempts rip. He responds. I wait. An hour later out of nowhere he's about 100 yards away and coming out of the ravine with one raspy gobble. I don't know it's him at this point. I go with some purring and shut up. My brain is screaming "less is more" but then I go ahead and throw in a few soft clucks. Why'd I just do that? Didn't I just say to myself "less is more" ?

I reposition for a better line of sight and plus I've just noticed my butt is asleep with one position paralysis. I see his colored head bobbing over the fast growing meadow grass. "You're mine now suckah." is what's running through my head. "Not so fast!" instantly runs through the brain right on the heels of that sentiment. I've got to connect the dots first.

He's in full view and 15 yards from my set up and triangulated to 30 yards from my position. He struts a few times but turns away. He's not liking something and the body language says "Uh. I think I'll just mosey this way and kinda slink outta here." My body language is in full predator mode.

"Not so fast!" comes back into my brain circuitry only this time it's not my head talking to me. It's my head talking silently to the tom.

Steady, steady. Pfffft. Flop. Flop. Dead.

I'm a blessed and happy man in many more ways than this particular forest chicken hunt. I have a handsome and beautiful bird from last year in the freezer which now has a soon-to-be-frozen buddy right next to him. It may take me years of negotiation with my sweet wife but I'm planning to have both mounted in full flight poses. My goal is to have both appearing on the inside wall above my doorway in the cathedral entryway to my home on either side of a deer mount it took me 5 years to negotiate the placement of. Plan B is on the wall above my workbench in the garage.
44.) Bob Peck - 04/29/2013
Ooops! Forgot the pic of the snaggle foot.

And of course there is only one way to get an up close, real time view of the Lord's color & design pallet!

Congrats to Jon & Bob P and wtf to Ventilator.

Sometimes I feel sorry for him and think I should try to be friends and then..................

I helped my son-in-law kill his first Spring gobbler yesterday. It is destined to be one of my top 5 memories of hunting, no doubt.

Luv is in the air everyone. Peace out, stand in the sunshine, luv the one your with.

Unless your hunting with your bud, that would be nasty.
