The missus wanted to go to one of those open-to-the-public orchards (you know the place, pick-your-own berries in season and an on-site store selling fresh-picked fruit, preserves of various kinds, etc) so we hopped in the car and made the 40 minute drive (It didn't take much concinving because their primary output is peaches, and fresh peaches are my favorite fruit.) After picking up some sacks of peaches (two different freestone varieties), some jars of whatever it was she found to try I spied a table loaded with several types of homemade pies. Among them were a few buttermilk pies. In spite of having lived in TX for over 20 years neither of us had ever tried one. So, inspired by reading Billy and Bullz-i constistenly singing the praises thereof I decided to pick one up and bring it home.

I tried a slice last night and...I'm sold. You'd never know buttermilk had anything to do with it if it wasn't in the name because there's nothing even remotely buttermilk-ish in the flavor. It's pretty much just sweet and vanilla-like. Kind of like Italian Sweet Cream. I think some fresh berries on top would work really well with it. Good stuff. :tu:

ATTA BOY! THAT DAMN BILLY GUY GOT ME ADDICTED TOO. BERRIES WOULD ALSO BE A GOOD TOPPER

They're about 10 miles east of Terrel, TX. That's only ~1,500 miles for you. :wink

Ironically, the little BBQ stand out back did not have ham on the menu.

If anyone wants Barbaras recipe I'll try to dig it up, it's simple to make.

I'd certainly be much obliged.

I was going to put CW on it, but honestly it's plenty sweet enough without it. Though I suppose some tart berries might make the extra sugar necessary.

I've never tried buttermilk pie before but I'm sure my bride would make it for me.
Please share your wife's recipe when you find it.
Thanks!!!

One of the things that got dug out of the closet along with my old record albums was our electric ice cream maker. After my last post I remembered the 4.5 lbs of fig puree I made from the end of last season's crop from my backyard tree and then stuck in the freezer. Said puree just got done cooking and is cooling, after which it'll go into the ice cream maker and become an a la mode topping for buttermilk pie.

Berries? We don't need no steenkin' berries.

Hey, don't blame me. I was just caving in to peer pressure myself. Billy started it.
