For the first time since I started this little obsession I was unable to hunt the archery season opener. Timing is everything, and in spite of an entire summer of drought we finally got a good, hard rain (first in a long time) this past Saturday...which just happened to be the first day of the deer archery season. :bang: Since my only local options for bowhunting are pretty much inaccessible in weather like that (can't even get to parking areas without a high-clearance 4WD and mud tires), and usually for up to a week afterward, I was shut out for the weekend. Sure, I could have gotten in before the early rains hit...but then I would have been stuck there for 4 or 5 days.

On top of that I just found out that I didn't get picked for any of the drawn public land hunts I put an entry in for this year, for the 3rd year in a row.

Someone's trying to tell me something.

I've been out twice and haven't seen much. Is it too early to be discouraged?

It's never too early when you're trying to be proactive.

7.) Dan-o - 10/01/2013
Someone's trying to tell me something.
Nah. Someone is trying to fix the drought and hopefully bring some relief!

Sadly Virginia doesn't have an opening weekend. It blows my mind that in a hunting friendly open carry state like VA we still don't have Sunday hunting. It's an opening day (Saturday) and yes, I'll be out there. For the first time in 7 years I worked my butt off all summer clearing trails, cutting brush, shoring up stands, cutting shooting lanes in June, hanging a few new sets and confirming the same patterns I've enjoyed on the property are still the same. Are they still the same? Yep. This means I won't see squat but I'll be out there for the peace and tranquility my life lacks any other time of year.

oct. 1st opener in N.Y. southern tier and I was in my stand most of the day :tu: let this young 6pt. pass at 25 yds. and saw 9 turkeys but no shots :re: i'm retired now so i'll be out just about everyday

I got out last eve (opening day) after work. I saw what appeared to be a decent buck about 15 yards from my tree, unfortunately, I was still about 45 yards from my tree! :bang: I moved in a little closer but never got another glimpse through the unusually heavy underbrush.

I took the day off yesterday and sat most of the day, to see 2 deer. It was 85*, my Thermocell was working overtime, and I sweat through my clothes on the way too/from my stands for both sits.

But still - it was better than being at work. :wink

Yeah, my Thermocell is going to be my best friend this Saturday too (assuming it doesn't rain early again...40% chance in the forecast at the moment). Even though it was relatively cool here this morning (77) when I was driving to work the humidity was 86%.

But I'm with you on the "better than being at work" part. I didn't get to take any vacation time this year in spite of the hundreds of hours I have accumulated, and I'm really needing my quiet time in the woods...'skeeters and all.

I missed out on the SD opener but have been so focused on our trip out west river to spot and stalk for mule deer this weekend ... Whities will need to wait till I get back !!!

Saterday AM - < Off for 1 week to do nothing but focus on archery hunting :hb:
