When my dad came home with his 460 Smith and Wesson pistol, i couldnt help myself, but to make fun of him when he told me he was going to hunt deer with it. However, after shooting it and looking at the ballistics I quickly realized that with a little practice and of course a VERY SOLID rest it was possible to shoot this pistol 150 yards and even further. Well long story short my my dad ended up having to work the first 2 days of the IL gun season so i took his pistol out the first morning and shot this doe at 40 yards. So needless to say I was pretty pumped I had never shot a deer with a pistol and it was a great experience. So Saturday morning rolls around and its my brothers turn to use hand canon. Around 8:30 he hears something coming through the timber, so he gets ready, and what steps out? Yep you guessed it a 161" 11 pt steps out and he drops it. Now let me remind you this is the second big buck he has shot this year. Im sure some of you remember the other pic I posted of his 173" 12 point. But, needless to say I was very happy for him.

Awesome deer.

That's a brute, great job

I love hunting with a pistol. Great looking deer

Brothers...always gotta' one-up you! :wink

Nice deer, and nice shooting on both. Even with a long barrel and scope, shooting a pistol accurately at 40 yds is not as easy as most people probably think. Especially if you're anticipating that whole "equal and opposite reaction" thing Newton taught us about. And there doesn't appear to be any cheap way to get in your practice time at the range either, with even on-line pricing for .460 S&W running anywhere from $1.40-$3.40 / round. Reloading your own would help a lot.

Sounds like fun though.

Yeah thats what i got the old man for, let him buy the ammo and ill just shoot it lol. I tried free standing and it is damn near impossible to hold steady. Feels like your holding a 15 pound weight out in front of you, thats why I made sure i had a good solid rest!

I should also point out that the 460 is a BAD AZZ round. Both deer were knocked over when the bullet hit them. With the hide on, the entrance and exit didnt look terrible large. However, when we skinned them, you could really see the damage that round creates. The exit wasnt huge but you could fit your entire fist through the entrance hole. It spits out a 260 grain bullet at 2000fps.

Damn, thats some powerful knockdown! Congrats to both of u!

For how long were your ears ringing?

Nice deer, excellent story and may I add ... every now and again it's nice to see hunting related content on Hunting Country.

I have been sending practice rounds of .454 Casull through my .44 Mag Raging Bull (8-3/8" barrel) in a crazy dream (you might say dream turned nightmare) to use this round in a hunting situation. I'm more interested in the forensics of the wound channel than I am about the feasibility. After a little research I've also concluded a .460 vs. .454 is like a coin toss between a .308 and a 30-06 (both of which I own and have put down deer this year). Although I have yet to actually shoot a .460 I will, just to be able to put the coin-toss theory to the test.

Immediately I'm finding it nearly impossible to withstand the punishment on my ears and the webbing on my hand this .454 round brings even with the ported barrel of the Raging Bull. The dream/goal started with a .44 special (do-able, reasonably priced but slow) then moved to the .44 mag (shooting accurately out to 85 yards) and now in the insanity, it's moved to the .454 Casull. All rounds fired reliably and safely through the same pistol.

I searched for a word to describe how this round might perform in a hunting situation and all I could come up with is "stupid" which was in a neck-n-neck tie with "impractical". By stupid I don't mean dumb or ignorant. I mean there are so many variables associated with controlling the weapon for accuracy with this round I wonder if I'll remember it all during the moment of truth. Does either word deter me? Heck no. At 6' & 240 lbs I'm no lightweight but God willing, if I don't go deaf or the pistol doesn't kick back and hit me in the face I'm going to reach this goal (someday).

Thanks for sharing, now let's get a pic of your Dad with his kill.

Sweet and nice shoot'n.
And I bet it was VERY loud. My 44 is very loud with 44spl loads.
Posy up a pic of the gun
