As I posted in the So...What did everyone get for Christmas? thread one of my gifts was a bottle of Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon. My wife mentioned to my sister-in-law that I've been looking to explore some premium whiskey varieties but hadn't yet decided which one to try first. So they consulted with their local booze-monger who talked them into getting me the Blanton's.

Wow, that's good stuff.

I'd spent my entire legal imbibing years drinking the typical entry-level Seagram's, Jack Daniels, etc whiskey bottlings, which I just couldn't find any real enjoyment in unless they were the base for a mixed drink. But this has opened my eyes (er, palate) regarding what a bourbon can taste like. The interesting part was the gradual development of the flavors (spices, butterscotch and a hint of vanilla) on the tongue as the 93 proof alcohol burn subsides. Fairly complex for a distilled spirit.

So, chime in with your favorite corn and rye liquor.

I only drink scotch / bourbon / whiskey on the rocks and haven't gone that high end on the bourbons, in fact, I never paid any attention to them. Let us know how your experiment turns out. KYHunter introduced me to a good one a few years ago, Woodfield Reserve. I also like Makers, Knob Creek, and a few others in the same price range.
