Anyone built their own smoker? I have been kicking it around and want some input.

I am thinking of going the Alton Brown route and building a flower pot smoker, or tracking down a steel drum and going that route! Anyone have any experience building one?

No sir. I did go the Billy B route. Do you or would you like to smoke during the winter or cold months? The Flower Pot would seemed to be some what more insulated for colder weather and would hold the temp better that an un-insulated steel drum. A key being consistent smoking temperatures through out the smoking process.

I tried to bring up the Alton's video. Apparently Good Eats has a thing about copy rights.

Sounds intriguing though

Just google flower pot smoker and there are a lot of people that have recreated his design, I might try one, sounds cheap enough.

hmmm, need a bigger pot for Texas Brisket than some of those pot sizes were.

I like the round top design:

Big Al is gong to get a knock on the door for his pot smoking.
7.) DParker - 02/05/2014
Brown also did a Good Eats episode on Indian cuisine where he turned a big clay pot into a tandoor and used it to make Tandoori Chicken (lip-smackin' good stuff). Who knew clay pots were such versatile backyard cooking devices?

The gardening/clay pot lobby knows no bounds.

If I find myself at a garden store, I think Im gonna try me one of these terra cotta smokers!

According to the wife, clay pots around the house, whether in use or not, are out of bounds. Who knew?

See: "Guest towels and decorative soaps on the dish in the bathroom" Rule.

TxHunter built a drum cooker a couple of years ago, or maybe he just refurbished an old cooker.

Anyway, this site has some good links to all sorts of smoker and cooker builds:

Throughout history, or just since the invention of frozen food? :wink

If this gets out, the people with the $800 green eggs (but no ham....seems like a rip-off) are gonna be pissed....

Don't be hate'n the egg.

No Ham? Sure there is, the guy standing in front of it pulling out the gourmet pizza for his girl friend. Who is quite impressed it wasn't his mom's clay pots. You still remember what girls friends are, right?

Now before you argue, sure, some girls like crafty, fugal handymen with big hats. :re: :-)

Well anyways, I like the emerald color glaze of them suckers. And yes, I like the terra cotta look too. But, a stainless steel smoker, is nice too.

A friend of mine turned me on to some Green Egg spice mix or rub or something...I'll have to go look it up..it was excellent...Never got around to trying the recipe for myself, though...I don't even remember what it was...Dammit!...One more new year's resolution to add to the list from last year...

Those green eggs are pretty, for sure...

Believe it or not, my son bought an egg, it works good but it is heavy & a lot more trouble than Smokintex smokers. That boy never did listen to me, dang yuppie:bk:

Sure, pot smoking by itself isn't bad but it's a doorway habit. First you wave some meat in front of some smoke with your friends at camp while giggling. No big deal. Then you start in on your mom's flowerpots, crafting some sort of little house thingy. Then you score an old metal trash can and poke a few holes in it and use some clothes hangers for meat hooks. Then it's on to the hard stuff -big round 1/4 steel drums on wheels or those designer ceramic egg dealies all the while wasting your time and money perfecting recipes and methods. Instead of wearing a wife beater and drinking on your front porch with your latest ex, you are now working on flavor profiles and spice rubs, impressing friends and entering contests. There's just no going back.

Think about your decisions.

Yeah, what's that crap all about. Little heart shaped soaps that don't suds, towels you are not supposed to use.

Get in there, wash like a man with Lava and wipe your hands on the curtains. That's what I do.

I also sleep on a little futon in the basement a lot too.

It's a never ending vicious circle I tell ya.

This is your brain. This is your brain on dry rub. Any questions?
