1.) crookedeye - 03/16/2014
lets talk food and water ...if youre out in the mountains, theres no doubt in my mind I could survive for a week off mountain houses and a water source ..like a beaver pond..
after 2 or 3 days you would think the mountain houses would get old...

so whats a good light weight food besides oats and rasins...and you can pack for 6 days?? I have a pro hiker water purification thingy that I had for 10 years now and never used...but the first beaver pond I come across it's going to get some action..
2.) crookedeye - 03/16/2014
my concerns would be a lunch... I wouldn't what to carry a stove and food when i'm hunting elk.. what could you pack for a week??
3.) crookedeye - 03/16/2014
....so is a ham sammich out of the question?
4.) Deerminator - 03/16/2014
Elk meat
5.) crookedeye - 03/16/2014
elk meat!

I need to kill one before I eat it..i was thinking about living off the land ...fish, grouse, worms, and larvae. but I don't think so...

my pack will be the elberstock black window, hunting partner obh...if he doesn't puss out...now I need tents, sleeping bags, water purification things..and" food"
6.) crookedeye - 03/16/2014
black window blue widow its all the same...which reminds me I need to spray my basement, with ground control..
7.) NEBigAl - 03/17/2014
Noodles! Those little noodle sides are great. Throw some tuna in em for protein.
8.) bluecat - 03/17/2014
Dehydrated water is light and will last virtually forever. Problem solved.
9.) Ventilator - 03/17/2014
The best thing ive found is peanut butter, bacon & honey sammiches on toasted bread. Vacuum pack it to preserve and save space. They will stay good for a month. Super high calories and very good for lunch.
10.) bluecat - 03/17/2014
Peanut butter, honey is good like Ventilator said. Summer sausage is also something you could put in the sandwich or eat on the side. Those foods have a long shelf life and provide nutrient dense calories.
11.) NEBigAl - 03/17/2014
Just take a few swigs of olive oil...get you your calories and internal lubrication in one
http://www.rei.com/product/847651/kelty-ignite-down-16-sleeping-bag
how bout a tent.. I like the ignite but would probally go with the 150 dollar one..
14.) Ohbuckhunter - 03/24/2014
I say we invite big al cause he has everything where going to need. He can pack all the gear and we can pack the beer.
15.) Deerminator - 03/24/2014
Now yer talk'n
how bout a tent.. I like the ignite but would probally go with the 150 dollar one..
I have a Kelty Gunnison 2.2. Its a good tent, less than $200. It could be lighter for sure, but it sets up in about 1 minute and Ive been in some crazy alpine storms in it and it stood up great. I would probably fork over a little extra money and get something lighter if I was doing it again though.
17.) Deerminator - 03/24/2014
An 8x10 nylon tarp and some parachute cord.
18.) p-pumped - 03/25/2014
Mountain houses are ok, expensive, heavy, and suck after a couple days. What are you taking for a heat source for cooking?

Take more water purification than you ever think you will need, drops are light and dose a lot, Giardia would not be fun to get.

Tent, get the lightest you can afford, as long as it is a good brand. I have a MSR Hubba, and love it.

For a sleeping pad I would get a foam and a self inflating pad. Dont do a blow up pad, they are cold.

for a heat source probally a jet boil, I have one of those self inflating pads, and maybe buy one of those cheap tents from bass pro for around 30 bucks.

Obh...the more I think about this, there's a 50/50 chance we may not come out of this alive....
20.) Ohbuckhunter - 03/26/2014
I'll bring a live feed camera with us so everyone knows when to send life support.
21.) bluecat - 03/26/2014
Uh, no. We don't need to see you and CrookedEye spooning at night.

:duh::duh::duh::duh:
23.) Swamp Fox - 03/26/2014
I'm not sure a $30 tent is gonna hold up to them spooning, either. I've seen OHBH in a tickle fight with Jon, and let me tell you, he's a thrasher...
24.) Deerminator - 03/26/2014
Like it when they show enthusiasm
25.) Swamp Fox - 03/26/2014
LOL...
26.) bluecat - 03/26/2014
It's like having sex with Kobe Bryant, you can kick and scream all you want, but...it's gonna happen.
27.) p-pumped - 03/26/2014
Watch www.steepandcheap.com. Good deals on tents and stuff

He's a feisty one let me tell ya. CE will just give up and take it.
29.) Deerminator - 03/26/2014
Was there any oils or puddings involved?

There wouldn't be enough bourbon and Nyquil in the world to put me to sleep after seeing something that horrifying.
31.) Ohbuckhunter - 03/26/2014
This little piggy went to the market.
32.) Ventilator - 03/26/2014
So, if no Mountain House, what do you use for food? You dehydrate your own food?
33.) p-pumped - 03/26/2014
A lot of stove top put in vaccum seal bags, oatmeal, dried noodles. Packaged chicken and tuna. Vaccum seal bags work great Open bag add hot water and Packaged chicken added to it is really good. Tuna packs with noodles. Focus on getting good that is around 100 calories per ounce so you don't have to carry as much. I do take a couple mountain house meals, but not many.
34.) p-pumped - 03/26/2014
If it is not too far back in and If I take my jet boil frying pan, I eat spam. If its cold out take several eggs and put them in a container, shake it well scrambled eggs every morning that don't take up more room than a water bottle. But if you are walking several miles a day eggs spam and frying pans stay home
35.) Ohbuckhunter - 03/26/2014
But what about beer.
36.) p-pumped - 03/26/2014
No beer. Sorry
37.) crookedeye - 03/26/2014
But what about beer.
all we need is a copper tube, yeast, and some water out of a beaver pond and we can make are own...and some tin foil..
38.) p-pumped - 03/26/2014

39.) p-pumped - 03/26/2014

This trip is getting me all excited. Lil white lightning n bull bugling.
41.) crookedeye - 03/27/2014
I was thinking of making a bowl out of the tin foil, I quess you could double it as a hat..

I would load up on some beaver pond water when I came across one..there nice and still , and a guy could easily scoop water out of it..i think I read that in a survival book one time..
42.) crookedeye - 03/27/2014
This trip is getting me all excited. Lil white lightning n bull bugling.
43.) crookedeye - 03/30/2014
I like the grouse thing, maybe shoot a couple and cook them up over a fire, I have this fishing reel outfit, it comes in a 8" by 10" case.. pretty well made.. I don't no if ronco made it or not....
44.) crookedeye - 03/30/2014
its one of those fishing reels you would only break out in an emergencey... like a life or death situation..
45.) crookedeye - 03/30/2014
the bottom of the rod has a compass glued on to it, so at least we no we wont get lost..
the bottom of the rod has a compass glued on to it, so at least we no we wont get lost..
That compass is prob accurate within +/- 60 degrees, you're darn near certain to be heading towards the right hemishphere!
47.) crookedeye - 03/30/2014
I just keep walking, my first time in the mountains prolly 25 yrs ago, I headed out with my 3 buddys and we all split up. no gps's or nothing, I must of walk at least a mile zig zagging here and zig sagging there..it was all fun and games until it started to get dark...

"People die every day"

O.J.

CE, could you leave us a will just in case? It would give you peace of mind if you knew where all your stuff would be going in the case of unfortunate demise. I'm only thinking of you.
56.) Deerminator - 04/01/2014
I agree Bluecat.
